These are challenging times for children and young people. Problems with anxiety, loneliness and depression are increasingly common. This can cause problems at school, at home and in social lives; places that should feel safe, but sometimes don’t. It can be distressing to both the young people affected, and to their family. Therapy does not provide a cure, but it can certainly help; providing a secure, safe and even private space for children and young people to express themselves, without judgment or fear. The young people I work with frequently establish a secure therapeutic relationship that serves as a pillar of tranquility and steadiness. This connection often proves instrumental in enabling them to navigate and confront their challenging thoughts and emotions more effectively.

Art therapy can be particularly supportive to children and young people, who may find it hard to verbalise or be vocal about their internal feelings. It can enable them to:

  • Express thoughts and emotions that may be challenging to verbalise, in creative ways.
  • Gain clarity and a deeper understanding of themselves and their experiences.
  • Create a secure and trusted space to explore their feelings with a supportive figure.
  • Develop fresh perspectives on problems or challenging situations, even having fun and being playful as they do so
  • Discuss complex emotions or difficult events in a more accessible manner.
  • Cultivate improved relationships with both friends and family.
  • Enhance self-awareness and foster a greater sense of identity.

I also have specific training and experience in helping ADOPTED and LOOKED AFTER children. If you would like to know more, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
